Light magnesium oxide is mainly used in the production of rubber and neoprene adhesives. Magnesium oxide acts as an acid absorbing agent in the manufacture of rubber, and acts as a vulcanization crosslinker, a scorch inhibitor and a chelate resin in a chloroprene adhesive. Magnesium oxide reduces the sintering temperature in ceramics and enamels. In the manufacture of grinding wheels and paints, it is used as filler. In medicine, it is used as an antacid and laxative for the treatment of hyperacidity, stomach and duodenal ulcers. In food processing, can be used as a whitening agent or a fine decolorizing agent for sugar.
The largest use in agriculture is as a feed for fertilizers and livestock. It is a major element in the metabolism of plants and animals. When used as a feed for dairy cows, it prevents neurological dysfunction caused by magnesium deficiency. It can also be used in FRP, dyeing chemicals, electronics industry, insulation materials and petroleum additives, casting, phenolic plastics, etc.
